Grandma Goes to the Fair · An Art-Season Character Series
Art fairs are built for a certain kind of visitor: slow, serious, holding a tote bag. Our grandma is not that visitor. She’s chic, extremely fit, and has opinions about every booth before she’s reached it.
The series follows her through art-fair season, from Frieze to Art Basel, through the booths, aisles and gallery thresholds where everyone else performs contemplation. She doesn’t perform anything. She does lunges by the sculpture.
Underneath the joke is a spatial question I bring to every event I design: how does a person actually move through a fair? Where do they stop, where do they cut a corner, what pulls them across the aisle? The grandma is a test visitor, and her route, with all its interruptions, shows how the fair is choreographed.
The settings are fully photographic, so her presence feels plausible enough to be funny.
